Ameraucanas are a pure breed of chicken that are uniquely American. The breed was developed in the 1970's using Araucana chickens imported from Chile, and an effort was made to produce a blue egg laying chicken while avoiding the lethal alleles that were present in Araucana stock.
Currently eight varieties are accepted by the APA, including: Black, Blue, Wheaten, Blue Wheaten, White, Buff, Silver, and Brown Red.
We have decided to focus on the Self Blue, or Lavender variety of Ameraucanas for the time being. We are hoping to breed Black to Lavender splits in the near future to . Black Ameraucanas are accepted into the APA standard and Self Blues are in the process of becoming a recognized variety. Our foundation birds consist of Paul Smith, Redden, and Blehm lines.
